Star of David and Leather Pants – Jewish Stories on Tour

Star of David and Leather Pants – Jewish Stories on Tour

Even after 1,700 years of Jewish life in Germany, Jewish people are often confronted with prejudice-based, mostly negative images about them within society. In Bavaria, too, Jewish life in everyday life is usually perceived in the context of the Shoah or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The pop-up exhibition “Mit Davidstern und Lederhosen” (With Star of David and Lederhosen) aims to tell stories about Jewish life in Bavaria beyond the stereotypes. To this end, stories were sought and prepared, such as that of the Bavarian visionary Levi Strauss from Buttenheim. But the pop-up project does not stop there: In addition to many other stories about well-known Bavarian Jews from the past and present, there are acting performances and art objects – also from Bavaria’s Jewish communities – to admire. Personal encounters also have their place in the exhibition project, whether with the speakers or with young Jews from the Free State, who have accompanied the project from the beginning.

Since summer 2023, the team has also been working on a stronger focus on sustainability and digitalisation. The pop-up performance is to be made more accessible to educational institutions as an online-offline offer in the digital space with a 3D tour, virtual reality spaces and digital educational packages, thereby reaching a wider audience.
The project is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for Family Affairs, Labour and Social Affairs as part of the prevention of radicalisation. It aims to make Jewish life in Bavaria and beyond visible as well as to counter conspiracy myths and combat anti-Semitism.
